Nonfiction Books and Articles
Even when I’m making up a story, our wonderful world is always a great source of inspiration. Being true to the facts sometimes informs the story. The life cycle of the monarch butterfly dictated the pace of events in Grace and the Butterfly Effect. Finding a peak before Mt. Greylock on the Appalachian Trail inspired a whole new chapter in Nature Girl. I had to write about Zeno’s Desperate Adventures because I was obsessed with African gray parrots.
I’ve also written over 50 non-fiction short books and articles that have been used in classrooms all around the world. Researching those books taught me a lot about a wide variety of topics — such as the environmentalist Marjory Stoneman Douglas, infinity, land forms, the Underground Railroad, the ancient city of Cahokia, prairies, and many more. I love learning new things and I know kids do too.
